BGS Ski Trip 2019

During the Easter holidays a team of 30 students from Batley Grammar School travelled to Livigno, in Italy to ski in the magnificent Italian Alps. Livigno is set in a wide, remote valley near the Swiss border. The ski resort caters for all skiing abilities, and is home to some truly stunning scenery. It was a week filled with blue skies, big smiles and resilience shown by all students as they challenged themselves to learn a new skill. The snow conditions were fantastic, particularly as it was late in the season and we were delighted to receive a fresh coating of powder on our arrival to the resort!

Each day the students participated in four hours of ski lessons delivered by local Italian instructors and enjoyed a mountain-side lunch. The BGS Ski Team 2019 consisted of a range of abilities from beginner to intermediate, with some having never seen a pair of skis before. The beginner groups made great progress throughout the week, underpinned by their positive attitude and growth mind-set. They were given a series of tasks along the way including a giant obstacle course (much to their delight!) and a slalom course to really test their turns. The intermediate groups refined their parallel turns and tackled some more challenging skiing with great control and enthusiasm.

During the evenings students participated in a range of activities from bowling, a team quiz, a pizza night and a disco held on the last evening. This year we were delighted to continue the tradition of awarding  students with the Batley Ski Awards (a.k.a the BSA’s!) to recognise exceptional character shown on the slopes. We also saw the return of the coveted helmet covers. These were awarded to students for progress, bravery and courage and were worn with sheer delight and pride on the slopes the following day!

On our final day in the resort we celebrated yet more success with the ski instructors who presented each child with a ski achievement record to recognise their progress.  Every student achieved at least their Level 2 Award indicating that they could demonstrate good control and turn competently on the slopes. This was another great achievement for the Batley Ski Team and topped off an incredible week had by all! Follow us at @BatleyGS to see more highlights from the trip and future events.
